So at HeroesCon this year I started taking around an empty sketchbook to some of my favorite artists and asked them to draw Sherlock Holmes. It could be any canon they’d like, even their own interpretations, and I think so far all of the artists are having a lot of fun with it. I’m SUPER lucky to have already gotten such amazing contributions from Eric Canete, Cassandra Poulson, Mad Rupert, Ming Doyle, Jackie Lewis, Scott C., and Becky Cloonan.

As Promised: A Tutorial.
Aka: “An essay of thoughts on why John is impossible to draw”.
The problem with a tutorial on how I draw is that walking you through it tells you absolutely nothing about how to to do it..
This is how I draw Greg and Mycroft; draw a box or circle, catch the expression, refine.

See? It tells you nothing about how to do it for yourself, these characters are already developed. I only need a few lines and no reference so there are no other stages in producing a drawing other then:
1: Think of somthing.
2: Draw it.
However I do need a character design for John and as I know that could well be difficult, I’ll track my progress and call it a tutorial. What makes John tricky from a cartooning perspective is that Martin Freeman has an incredible range of facial expressions.

Most of the designs I see are happy to let him just go on being adorable but I’m stubborn and wanted to be able to use the same design for more serious Post-Reichenbach bits. Impossible of course but lets have a go.
